I will now be analyzing three different double page spreads of food magazines to see how they all have similar conventions and features and also to get examples on how I can design my double page spread .
1 . Italian Food Forever : Photo link
- The colors of the red table and table cloth match the red bolded titles on wha food dish will be told how to be made .
- The photos in the back are what is being told what the recipe is .
- In black and bold it lists the ingredients of the recipe then in normal black font it explains how to make the dish .
- On the right side page the recipe information is put on a transparent white background so you can still see a portion of the photo .
- Both photos take up more than half of the pages showing that these will be the main focus of this double page spread .
- There is no big large clear title on the spread saying whaat the recipe is, the titles are in the same size font as the rest of the words on the page. The only thing making the name of the recipe pop out from the rest of the words is the red font color .
- The simple background makes the food in the photo clear to the reader and does not make the spread look like there is too much going on.
2. Good Food: Bakes and Cakes : Photo link
-Simplicity of the spread makes the point clear and the page is easy to read
- No color is added on the text side of the page which makes the spread look even more basic and simple
-Photo of the cake looks very appetizing and presented nicely to attract the readers to try making the cake or consider reading the recipe
-Good layout with the ingredients listed on the left side of the left page and then the steps on how to make the cake are listed on the right side of the left page.
- The plain background of the photo of the cake makes it very clear that the main focus of the page is on how to make this cake.
- The yellow frosting on the cake adds color to the spread and add a contrast to the blue and brown shades in the photo
-The font of the title is also very simple along with the rest of this page, especially since it is just black
- Overall, I am not really a fan of how basic this spread looks but I do think that the main photo being on one page is a good idea to really show off what the dish is.
3. Ok ! Magazine : Photo link
- Multiple foods are mentioned throughout the double page spread which adds more information on a short amount of space.
- The photo of the cheesecake does not look very appetizing to me but the blue background in that specific photo adds contrast to the photo.
- The photos of the cookies were taken well and look more appetizing to the audience since the chocolate looks melted and gooey.
- It lists the recipes on how to make both items in the light pink boxes on the left side of each page.
-All the titles are written in a bright red bold font which makes them easy to read and stand out to the reader.
- On both recipes, the photo of the main dish takes up majority of the page and the writing is very small.
- Mentions name of chef to attract readers to read the recipes and find out more information.
Overall, throughout the double page spreads of food magazines I have analyzed, they do share most of the same basic features. Each page seems to focus on no more than 2 recipes which make the magazine easy to read. On each page also they tend to list the ingredients and make them stand out in some sort of way, before listing how specifically you're supposed to make it. Each magazine adds different twists and styles to make them different and not basic.
