Double Page Spread Analysis

I will now be analyzing three different double page spreads of food magazines to see how they all have similar conventions and features and also to get examples on how I can design my double page spread .

1 . Italian Food Forever : Photo link
Image result for food magazine double page spread
- The colors of the red table and table cloth match the red bolded titles on wha food dish will be told how to be made .
- The photos in the back are what is being told what the recipe is .
- In black and bold it lists the ingredients of the recipe then in normal black font it explains how to make the dish .
- On the right side page the recipe information is put on a transparent white background so you can still see a portion of the photo .
- Both photos take up more than half of the pages showing that these will be the main focus of this double page spread .
- There is no big large clear title on the spread saying whaat the recipe is, the titles are in the same size font as the rest of the words on the page. The only thing making the name of the recipe pop out from the rest of the words is the red font color .
- The simple background makes the food in the photo clear to the reader and does not make the spread look like there is too much going on.

2. Good Food: Bakes and Cakes : Photo link

-Simplicity of the spread makes the point clear and the page is easy to read
- No color is added on the text side of the page which makes the spread look even more basic and simple
-Photo of the cake looks very appetizing and presented nicely to attract the readers to try making the cake or consider reading the recipe
-Good layout with the ingredients listed on the left side of the left page and then the steps on how to make the cake are listed on the right side of the left page.
- The plain background of the photo of the cake makes it very clear that the main focus of the page is on how to make this cake.
- The yellow frosting on the cake adds color to the spread and add a contrast to the blue and brown shades in the photo
-The font of the title is also very simple along with the rest of this page, especially since it is just black
- Overall, I am not really a fan of how basic this spread looks but I do think that the main photo being on one page is a good idea to really show off what the dish is.

3. Ok ! Magazine : Photo link
Image result for food magazine double page spread food magazines
- Multiple foods are mentioned throughout the double page spread which adds more information on a short amount of space.
- The photo of the cheesecake does not look very appetizing to me but the blue background in that specific photo adds contrast to the photo.
-  The photos of the cookies were taken well and look more appetizing to the audience since the chocolate looks melted and gooey.
- It lists the recipes on how to make both items in the light pink boxes on the left side of each  page.
-All the titles are written in a bright red bold font which makes them easy to read and stand out to the reader.
- On both recipes, the photo of the main dish takes up majority of the page and the writing is very small.
- Mentions name of chef to attract readers to read the recipes and find out more information.

Overall, throughout the double page spreads of food magazines I have analyzed, they do share most of the same basic features. Each page seems to focus on no more than 2 recipes which make the magazine easy to read. On each page also they tend to list the ingredients and make them stand out in some sort of way, before listing how specifically you're supposed to make it. Each magazine adds different twists and styles to make them different and not basic.

Table of Contents Analysis

I will be analyzing 3 different food magazine table of contents to see the common conventions and features between the magazines.

1. Food 52
    https://www.google.com/search?q=food+magazine+table+of+contents&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS862US862&sxsrf=ACYBGNRB5JFUhT-iv6KRx0IVMdhuviuEYg:1580141116239&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiooravlKTnAhXytlkKHcc7Af0Q_AUoAXoECAwQAw&biw=2560&bih=1334&dpr=0.75&safe=active&ssui=on#imgrc=OL4G2e1aw5ERrM:

-Elegant design and very basic but easy to read and still good looking .
-Photos go along with it being a food magazine and are both very good looking dishes .
- All page numbers are bigger than the text about the page and that is to draw attention to the audience to make it clear of the pages certain things will appear on .
- No clear order of the numbers surrounding the photo on the right side page .
-For the most part this Table of Contents spread is very basic and simple. There is not much that stands out to me in this spread besides its simple but elegant style.
- The colors of the food in the dish give the page color and makes the page look less bland .

2. Dessert Food Magazine
https://www.google.com/search?q=food+magazine+table+of+contents&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS862US862&sxsrf=ACYBGNRB5JFUhT-iv6KRx0IVMdhuviuEYg:1580141116239&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiooravlKTnAhXytlkKHcc7Af0Q_AUoAXoECAwQAw&biw=2560&bih=1334&dpr=0.75&safe=active&ssui=on#imgrc=uX474Ep21twfNM:

-This table of contents spread is very easy to read and understand.
- The colors of the photos go along with the color of the page number circles and table of contents title.
- Next to the page number it gives a small description of what will be shown on the pages.
- The photos on the side match the topic of the magazine .
- The pink bubbles around the page number is a good feature to add since it matches the theme of the magazine and also it makes the page numbers larger and bolder for the readers to read .
- All of the descriptions have famous chefs that will be talked about in them which can draw more attention to the readers because if they hear of someone they know and like on the page it gives a better chance of the reader continuing to read.

Image result for table of contents of a food magazine
- All photos go along with the magazines overall theme .
- The page number color and page title color matches well with the pictures and go with the Thanksgiving theme of the magazine .
- All page numbers and page titles are easy to read, the page numbers are all underlined and the titles are written in yellow in a bigger font than the description written in black smaller font on the right side .
- On al the photos it also features the page numbers in the upper left corner that correlate with what page the photos will be featured on.
- In the right bottom corner there are more pages with what will b featured on them listed but, since the font is much smaller than the other page numbers and titles it could mean that those pages are not as important or interesting .

Throughout the three magazine table of contents I have analyzed, I've noticed that they all share similar features and conventions. In all of them, the magazines emphasize the page number in some sort of way. Also for the most part, the colors on the page go well with the tones in the pictures and the entire theme of the magazines. Also, the pictures on all the table of contents are all relating to the magazines theme and design . The fonts all also go well with the theme of the magazine and the pictures. Overall, the table of contents all share most of the same features but still have features that make them all unique in their own ways fitting the style of the magazine .

Cover Analysis

I will be analyzing the components and the conventions of 3 different food magazines. They all follow the same basic conventions with their own styles and features added.

1. Bon Appetit

- The orange details on the title match the mac and cheese in the main photo
- The cheese stringing from the fork is appetizing and looks good to eat to the reader to get them to read more about the mac and cheese.
-The subtitle, "Dig Into Comfort", previews to the reader that the entire magazine will be solely based on comfort foods, such as Mac and Cheese.
-The cover line saying, "Mac and Cheese Hands down the tastiest version we've made" also draws the reader into reading more of the magazine because it will then show you how to make the same mac and cheese that caught your attention on the cover.
-The other cover lines base off the the overall theme of the magazine which is comfort foods. It mentions how to make easy deserts and even a sandwich. This all goes with the magazines theme and adds some flow to the magazine as a whole since its based around the same broad topic, comfort foods.
- All of the cover lines are clear and easy to read since they are laid over a grey background. The blue bolded words on the cover lines do not specifically go with the overall theme of comfort food, but are added as features to add variety to the book and to draw in more people to buy and read it.
-The color choices are all warm toned colors such as oranges, reds, and some yellows. These colors are used since colors like reds and yellows are known to make people hungry and catch their attention to the food since the colors are very bright too.
- The close details all on the mac and cheese such as the baked cheese on the perimeter of the bowl and the baked cheese sprinkled on top also make the photo more appetizing to the reader. The mac and cheese does not look like any basic mac and cheese you would get cheaply, it looks as there was much effort put into that dish and that it would taste almost as good as it looks.
- The yellow tear drop features the page number you can look at to find the recipe on the Mac and Cheese. This feature is very effective, so the reader does not have to flip through every page of the magazine and so the information can be given to you straightforward.
-The blue bolded words on 2 of the cover lines, add contrast to the cover since all the colors are warm toned.

2.Southern Living

-The cover photo has warm colors which compliment the yellow detailing on some of the titles to match the overall color scheme of the photo.
- The title, "Slow Cooker" gives the reader insight into what this edition of the magazine will be about and matches goes along with the cover photo.
- All of the cover lines are based on the "Slow Cooker" theme also by mentioning "105 easy comfort foods"
-The cover photo is in focus on the meal displayed has more of a blurred background of the glasses of wine towards the top right corner.
-The cover photo is very well focused on the meal shown to show the audience everything that is in the meal.
- The yellow box around "What's for supper" adds a pop of color that matches the photo and makes the cover line easier to read. If there were to be just white font, it wouldn't pop out and catch the readers attention.
-Adding numbers to your cover adds specificity of what will be mentioned in the rest of the magazine and gives the audience a cleared idea.
-The warm color scheme matches the southern theme, since the magazine is by Southern Living.

3. America's Test Kitchen

- In the cover photo, the main dish is in the rule of thirds which is more eye catching to the audience rather than it being in the center of the page.
- The title of this magazine and the titles of the cover lines match the sauce on the left side of the magazine and also go with the warm color scheme of the main dish.
- All of the cover lines perfectly match the edition of the magazine, "Sunday Suppers".
- In the handle of the pot, it names the dish that is displayed on the cover photo.
- The blue background of the counter contrasts the warm color scheme of the meal shown on the cover.
- The placement of the title makes the whole page looking more full and is also in the rule of thirds, instead of being in the center and going over some of the components of the photo.
- All of the cover lines give two examples of dishes that will be shown under the categories of different types of dinners such as "Old-World Classics" , "Lazy Dinners" ' and " Dinners Around the World".
- In the cover photo, the color of the sauce and bread, towards the top of the page, go along with the color scheme of the main dish shown.
- In the main dish you can see clearly what the main dish is supposed to be and is close up and detailed of the pot.

Genre Research

For the magazine portion of the exam, I will be creating a food magazine. I will be adding components to the magazine to make it unique while also following the basic conventions of a food magazine.

1.  Food Magazine

2. Genre Conventions:
- Main food dish on cover page
- Bright bold title colors to catch the readers attention
- Colors usually match the colors in the main photo
- 2 word title, compared to the title only being 1 word like Cosmopolitan
- A website to access recipes mentioned in the magazine
- Typically no actual people on the front cover
- Sometimes a few main headlines mentioned on the title
-Topics discussed in magazine is recipes, food reviews and interviews with chefs
-Barcode
-Headings

3. Production Techniques:
-Main dish or item filling up the front cover
-Title on the top of the dish in a bright bold color that goes with the theme of the magazine
-Colors of text goes with main photos
- Bold and change color of numbers on the cover to make the facts or hooks stand out and grab the readers attention

4. Target Audience
-Chefs
-People interested in how to improve their cooking
- Mothers looking for new recipes
-People who are very infatuated with cooking

5. Example 1

- In this magazine it well follows the conventions listed above. The orange and greens in the main dish compliment the colors of the orange and green fonts of what is expected to be in the magazine. The logo of the Food Network company is also orange to follow with the colors on the page. The title of this specific magazine, "Grill Everything" , is clear to read and big enough for this cover. The title is also 2 words which is how most food magazine titles tend to be. There is also a barcode at the bottom right corner which most magazines have also .

6 . Example 2

This example of this Food and Wine magazine also fit the conventions of the food magazine well. The bold red title of "Food & Wine" ,makes it clear to there audience that that is the name of the magazine. The bright red font color doesn't go exactly with the main dish pictured but it makes it clear to read. The use of the red bolded "17" also catches the readers attention and gets them to read whats inside . There is also a barcode in the bottom left corner. Lastly, there are no actual humans in the main cover photo which gives the reader the full understanding that this magazine will solely be about food .

7 . Six other Food Magazines:

     .

8 . Representation
Food magazines represent many food enthusiasts and many chefs around the world. It is represented that the food in the in the magazine are bound to be good and well
