Picture time
It is almost time for me to take my photos for my magazine. I have adjusted my timeline but plan on taking them one day next week. I have so far looked up some articles on tips on food photography. The biggest tips I have taken from these articles have been lighting, color, and background. These things were the most talked about with what I read. I have planned to take my pictures during the day and using the natural lighting from outside to try to get the best light. I was also going to try and use flash if they were not turning out good. (The camera I will be using is a camera my amazing teacher Mrs. Harwell allowed me to check out for the assignment). With color I plan on incorporating the colors within the dishes into the font and feature colors of my magazine too. This is to make everything look cohesive and all put together as one. If I were not to do that , it would be more cluttered and unorganized making it harder to focus on what the magazine will be about. The backgrounds and plating of my photos will complement the food. That was also another tip that I got from online that I think will be really helpful. I don’t plan on necessarily matching the plating and placemats but complimenting the colors perfectly to make it all have the same tones and feels. Once I take the photos during the week I will specifically look at colors that match the photos and compliment them along with color psychology on which colors attract people to things like food and being healthy and young.

Sketched out
Over the past few classes I have sketched out my cover page and also my table of contents page. Through the process I made sure to connect some details from the pages to have them all flow and have the same look/feel.
Cover Page
- The title I have had the idea to make it look simple but bold, nothing too crazy. The title color will depend on the photo once I have all my photos taken I am planning on figuring out a color scheme for each page.
- The spiked bubble around the "Health Girl Summer", will be continued throughout the magazine and also be a feature on the other pages to add emphasis to things like titles of numbers. In this case, it is making the edition of this magazine stand out.
- The lined box feature will also be continued throughout the magazine to section off things and make the writing of the magazine clear and organized. I thought this would be a good feature since I am targeting a younger audience starting at 16, the text will be easy for them to read instead of all cluttered and super small.
- I also thought the spike bubble feature would be a good thing to add because of my younger target audience. The shape is unique and makes the title pop out well which will draw attention to a younger audience which is my overall goal.
Table of Contents
- On the top where it says table of contents will be in the same font as the font I use on the front cover of the edition. I also am planning on adding the lined box to the title to carry the same features of the title to the contents page.
- The top 2 sections are the top recipes of the magazine. I thought the sectioned off boxes will make the contents easy to read but still have a description along with them.
- The use of multiple pictures on this spread is to try an attract my young audience. Having more pictures will interest a younger audience rather than just one photo and more words.
- The spike bubble around the numbers is the same from the front cover. I chose to use this feature to make the page numbers of the recipes stand out and to make the magazine flow.
Once I take my photos I will have a better idea of what exact color schemes will be used. Havng the photos will make it easier to pull colors from the photos into the font colors and make everything coordinate with everything and make it look seamless rather than all over the place and messy looking.

Language of my magazine
In my magazine, I have decided to target a young female audience which means my style and language will base solely on targeting that audience. With the title of my magazine, "Eatin' Goood" is a very informal way of saying eating good and is how the younger generations tend to speak like. The name of the edition is, "Health Girl Summer", which is a twist on the phrase, "Hot Girl Summer" that many young adult females were saying during Summer 2019 because of the rapper Megan Thee Stallion. During the summer, she even made a song called Hot Girl Summer that ended up blowing up which inspired my subtitle. The summer edition title, "Health Girl Summer" directs towards young females specifically which is my goal. On the cover, one of my features is going to say, "Eat ya plate" which will be a page on how to make a salad inside of a watermelon, which indicates you can eat your plate and also follows the young teen language. Another one of my front page features will e what my double page spread is all about which is the "EdiBOWLS", which will be an acai bowl in a pineapple and the page will explain how to make the acai, how to cut the pineapple and place the acai in the pineapple, and how to decorate the bowl and make it look presentable and taste delicious.

Costumes, Props and Mis-en-Scene
Props:
Since my magazine will have no real people pictured in it, I will mainly be using props. I will need to buy table cloths to use as backgrounds of the plates to make the plate presented nicer. I will also need to buy all the ingredients for making the foods shown in the photos.
Mis-en-Scene:
I am planning on taking most of my photos at home. I will have to probable to take them outside for the lighting to be the best. I will attempt to take some inside and choose which photos look best. The health theme of the magazine will give the magazine more of an earthy summer vibe and I will try attempting the earthy feel with using rustic plates and wooden details.
Costumes:
In my magazine there will be no people pictured so I will not have to worry about costumes.
I will go into further detail of the exact props and locations after the photos have been taken. I am not completely sure as of right now what till look best. Once I take the photos I will do a poll of which people think look the best.

Modeling my front cover
For my magazine since I am doing a food magazine, I do not plan on using any real life models. For the front cover I did a poll on which food people like better, avocado toast dressed with balsamic and tomatoes or banana bread muffins .
The top result was 20 votes for avocado toast and 13 votes for the muffins. I expected this result since you can make avocado toast very appealing to peoples eyes and tastes great too. I am planning of plating the toast on a cut tree stump to make the plate look more earthy. I am planning on the photo being across the entire page with either a white background or a nice table cloth to give the page some more color. The plate of the tree stump will be placed towards the bottom right and have the title of the magazine written largely across the top.
Under the title of the magazine, will be the specific title of this specific magazine, since its mainly based on health foods, it will relate to that topic. Then around the plate, I will write about 6 features that will surround the plate of toast giving the reader an idea of what will be inside the magazine.

Deciding Content for my Magazine
After researching the contents of a food magazine, I now am going to be starting to choose the content that will be best for the magazine. I have decided to create a food magazine but it will be a special edition to the magazine and that will be based on healthy food choices that also look appealing to the audience showing them how to make their healthy foods look well presented and also taste good. This magazine will be designed towards a young adult female audience .
Title Name Ideas:
Cover Image :
My initial thoughts of what I think would be good to have as a cover image would be a full photo of a food dish. At the moment I am not exactly sure of what the exact dish will be but, I will begin to think of ideas and then make a poll to see which more people would be attracted to.
Location of Photo Shoots:
As of right now, I am thinking of shooting all my photos at my house. I will have to adjust the place of my photos being shot depending on the lighting. I plan on trying to shoot in multiple locations such as inside and outside, then figure out which one is more appealing.
Font Style and Color Choices:
For the style of font, I have thought a lot about how exactly I am wanting the magazine to look and the font style will depend a lot on that. I have thought that a bold but delicate font would attract a young adult female audience. This type of font would look nice since the delicateness of it would attract females but then it also being bold would go well with the party edition of the magazine. My color choice will solely depend on the colors featured in the main cover photo. I want to use colors that will complement the main dish and pull the some of the exact shades from the photo to make that the colors of the font so it all will look like it flows instead of a bunch of random colors.
Editorial Features:
On the front cover, with all the feature stories I will be speaking of on the cover, I am planning on bolding the title or certain words in the features to get them to stand out. The colors to many the features pop out will match alongside the main cover photo and tie in with the color scheme.
Ads and Brands:
On the cover, I might add some ads to catch the readers attention. The ads will relate to the health food theme I was thinking about doing, maybe advertising a new health food place to eat. I was thinking of maybe mentioning Bamboo Healthy Foods, Bolay, or Playa Bowls.
Specific content:
I am planning on doing the double page spread on how to make well presented acai bowls. The bowls will be served in a pineapple and the page would explain on how to make the bowl and how to decorate them nicely. On the cover, I am thinking of having the photo of avocado toast decorated with tomatoes or strawberries and balsamic dressing, to make it look nicer. I will most likely put a photo of both in the table of contents, along with a few other healthy food items, like possibly banana bread muffins or even smoothies.
Title Name Ideas:
- In the Mood for Food
- foooooood
- FOOOOD
- All You Can Eat
- Yummy Yummy
- Eatin Good
