This episode begins with dim cool tinted lighting shining on Clay giving it a suspenseful effect of what he could have been dreaming about and speaking to Justin. He seemed as he did not want to speak about his dream. Then it switches to a scene of Ani speaking to her mother with really cold lighting giving me the feeling of emptiness. The cool color when their speaking really makes me feel the emptiness in their conversations as if its cold and dry. You can feel just by the color that Ani does not have the best connection with her mother and is continuously lying to her. This is shown not only by the dark cool grey tones of the setting but also the colors of their clothing; Ani is wearing a very dark reddish long sleeve blouse and her mother is dressed in a dark purple with some sort of design. But these also show the dark and coldness as they dress in muted dark colors.
The scene switches to a close up shot of just Ani speaking but the screen is black and white. This effect is put on as she speaks to the investigators/police and as she continues to blatantly lie to the police. When she is explaining what she is speaking about, the scene switches to flash back to that time and the camera tones are still dark and cool. This is meaning there is a flashback happening and also they are dressed in very dark attire since they were flashing back to right around the time when Bryce died and his mother was dressed in all black.
Tyler and Clay are talking in the hallway and the lighting is still very dull. Light is only shined on Tyler and Clay as both of them speak. This also implies the cold and emptiness that was also shown in the beginning of this episode. The use of this "cold and emptiness" effect is to show how everyone in the school is effected by what is happening to the students there. Clay is still dressed in dark colors, wearing a black hoodie and Tyler is also dressed in a black jacket too. There are no posters in the hallways and they are just very bland and white looking which also implies to me that everything and everyone is feeling very empty.
As Tyler and Clay speak they are also framed in the rule of thirds. r then right back in and the time is completely different. The first time Tyler and Clay were speaking, it was right after Bryce had died, then it switches back to present and the colors of everything become more vibrant and less dull. There are now posters on the walls in the hall ways and Clay and Tyler are both not dressed in all black anymore.
